Turn you fireplace into a true heat source and chase the winter chills away with energy efficient vent-free gas logs. Available for both natural and LP Gas installations, these attractive logs sets are designed to burn with your fireplace damper completely closed, so there's no heat loss up the chimney.
How do they do this? It's thanks to an extremely efficient (99.9%) burner system, combined with a safety oxygen depletion shut-off that will automatically turn off the logs should room-level oxygen drop below a comfortable level (about what you'd find at altitude, say in Denver, CO).
Log sets in 18, 24 and 30 inch widths are available. Figure the size you need by taking the front width of your fireplace and subtracting 10-12 inches. Prices range from $420 to $599 on our in-stock selections. Upgraded control options are available: wireless remote, thermostat and wall switch. Installation is available on all sets. Pre-pipe installations (gas already run to fireplace) are $175 including permit. Complete installations start at $575, which includes permits, inspection by the city and up to 10 feet of piping.
VENT-FREE FACTS
Things to consider before you choose vent-free logs:
Although gas has no natural odor a strong smelling additive has been used to help in leak detection. The combustion of this will cause and odor that will enter the room. If you have a sensitive sense of smell this odor may be detectable and may annoy you.
A by-product of combustion is water vapor. Normal use of vent-free logs will put humidity into your home. Too much humidity, however, will cause excess moisture build up on windows and/or walls. This can be minimized by providing fresh air and good circulation.
Vent-Free logs have exposed burners and injectors that may emit a slight "hiss". (Unlike vented logs where the burners are covered by sand and embers)
Installation of Vent-Free gas logs into fireplaces usually requires the use of a Heat Shield Hood to protect combustible materials. Shields are available in black and brass.
Vent-Free gas logs have specific set-up directions, and must be properly installed. Do no modify the set up by moving logs or obstructing burners. Any changes can drastically effect the burn of your log set.
Vent-Free products are not recommended for individuals who have Heart or Lung disease, Anemia or are Pregnant.
While the safety shut-offs are built in, a CO Detector may be a good idea for a Vent-Free log user. Some people are more affected by carbon monoxide than others. Early warning signs resemble the flu: headaches, dizziness, nausea.
Remember that Vent-Free products, in general, were tested in unconfined space, meaning an area that had 50 cubic feet of air volume for each 1000 BTU/H rating.
