October 29, 2018, VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Joe Taylor, President and CEO of Virginia Beach-based Taylor’s Do it Centers and Richmond-based Pleasants Hardware, was recently elected to the Board of Directors for Do it Best Corp.
Taylor was elected to a three-year term on the board at the co-op’s recently completed fall market and shareholders’ meeting in Indianapolis, IN. Taylor’s Do it Centers and Pleasants Hardware are member-owners of the Fort Wayne, IN-based co-op, which is the only U.S.-based, hardware, lumber and building materials buying cooperative in the home improvement industry. Do it Best Corp. has annual sales nearing $4 billion, supporting thousands of independently owned locations throughout the United States and more than 50 other countries.
“Joe’s incredible experience and expertise in our industry make him a perfect fit to represent his fellow member-owners on the Do it Best Corp. board,” said Do it Best Corp. The Taylor family’s experience in the independent home improvement industry is extensive. Originally founded in 1927 as Fuel, Feed and Building Supplies, the Taylors operate 11 locations in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Poquoson, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach, VA, as well as Moyock, NC. In 2016, Taylor’s acquired Pleasants Hardware, a seven-location operation in Richmond and founded more than a century ago.

Taylor and his two brothers, Bob and Russ, are the third generation of the Taylor family to lead the business, Today, all three have followed in their father Dawson’s footsteps. In addition to Joe serving as President and CEO of Taylor’s, Russ serves as Vice President and Operations Manager. Bob actually preceded Dan Starr as President and CEO of Do it Best Corp. from 2002-2016; he returned to the Virginia Beach area after his retirement and serves on the board of Taylor’s Do it Centers. In addition, five members of the fourth generation of the Taylor family are now actively involved in the family business.
Taylor has earned industry accolades and recognition throughout his career. He is actively involved in a number of civic leadership and community support roles. He is the current Chairman of the Board of Directors for Retail Alliance of Hampton Roads, Virginia, and has been a member of the Retail Alliance since 2012. He is the past Chairman of the Board of the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce (2016). He has been a member of the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce since 2014, is a past member of the Regional Chamber of Commerce Board (2017), and past board member of the First Tee of Hampton Roads (2011-16). He is a past member of the Advisory Board for Fulton Bank (2012-18), and past chairman, vice chairman, and board member for the Virginia Beach Resort Advisory Commission where he served as Transportation Committee Chair (1997-2006).
